This weekend, we celebrate Labor Day, our holiday. As workers, this is the one day of the year that the country says thank you for your hard work. As union members, it is especially important that we remember the struggle that we went through and still go through for respect and dignity. It took decades of fighting, organizing, and negotiating to get the 8 hour work day, weekends, overtime, and wages that allow us to live middle class lifestyle. It also took decades before a day honoring the workers would become a national holiday.
This Labor Day, take some much needed time to relax and enjoy your family and friends. All I ask is that you take a few minutes to speak to them, and especially to the children, about the real meaning of Labor Day and the importance of a strong labor movement moving forward. To all of the members of Local 2199, I hope that you have a Happy Labor Day.
